About the Show

Megalo Box (メガロボクス Megaro Bokusu) is a 2018 anime television series and produced by the studio TMS Entertainment. The series talks about a young man Junk Dog, also known as Joe, he is an underground fighter of Megalo Boxer from the outskirts of town where unlicensed citizens live in poverty, his real name is unknown. Joe is forced to throw fights to earn money for his crooked manager "Gansaku Nanbu", the illegal nature of his participation forces him to make a living off of throwing matches as dictated by his manager. After a while, this all changes once the Megalo Box champion Yuuri, who is also the top-ranked Megalo Boxer, enters his shabby ring below the guise of just another challenger, He seeks out Junk Dog once the latter insults his owner, meeting him in the underground ring he easily defeats him before telling him to figure his way up in Megalonia if he needs to fight him once more. Junk Dog is left with a challenge: "If you are serious about fighting me again, then fight your way up to me and my ring.". The first episode showed me that this is attending to be a very gritty boxing anime with a little of a homage to older anime 'Ashita no Joe'  with its aesthetics. Joe’s story was very much a product of its time and this series understands that and is writing with today’s audience in mind, however with some delicate callbacks to characters and things from the previous series. The episode begins when Joe talks to his manager, a dirty guy that likes betting and earning money, he makes him give up the match on purpose because of money. The first boxing scene was Junk Dog versus Ghetto Hachiya, joe like always takes down, we could clearly see that Junk Dog had the whip hand and could knock out poor Hachiya when he felt like it, just because of his manager makes him lose so that he can get the most amount of profit that he can. At the end of this episode, JD enters the ring again, but now he becomes a megalo boxer in megalonia, a giant boxing tournament held in the town that is unrestricted in terms of who can enter. which means anyone, regardless of age, nationality or qualifications will enter the tournament as long as they are a citizen. The main character and Yuri who is said to be the world champion in Megalo Boxing clash towards the end of the episode. The issue here is that Junk Dog has no citizenship, however, I doubt it will be a problem for long since the main focus appears to be the tournament. JD wants to take on a challenge that risks everything.
